A Filipino woman in Saudi Arabia is scheduled to be lashed 100 times by the government as punishment for being raped. To add to the tragedy, the Filipino has been held in prison since September 2009. In December 2009, the woman — known only as “Camille” — miscarried. Now, she is facing a medieval crime — all because she was raped.

This is BARBARIC, this is not Islam. These people are perverting it. Period. It hurts my soul to read stuff like this. There are Islamic feminist arguments supported by scholars. I hope that the combination of these glaring arguments against such putrid behavior can be paired with civil rights efforts to ELIMINATE these backward practices.
An Islamic scholar’s thoughts on this:
It is unfortunate that some victims of rape are treated as if they are guilty. If we are to be candid about such situations, we have to admit that such attitude is the result of a subconscious suspicion that the victim have had a share of the guilt in the affair. In Islam, we do not judge people on the basis of suspicion. We only judge them on the basis of clear evidence… A community which casts a stigma on the victim of rape, must consider its attitude. If there is blame to be attached, it is not to the victim but to the community for failing to provide adequate protection to prevent crimes of rape altogether.

This is fucking sickening, and I’m still not certain if the Philippine president, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, has asked the U.S. to intervene on this woman’s behalf. I cannot imagine that President Obama or Secretary of State Clinton will turn a blind eye to this case.
I also imagine that the representatives of the Islamic minority in the Philippines - which comprises about 5-10% of that country’s population - has something to say about this act of sheer barbaricism.
